Save the Cat Breakdown Series - Break Into Act Three

In the previous article, we explored the Save the Cat story beat of Dark Night of the Soul, where your protagonist is attempting to process their biggest loss or defeat to date. This is the lowest moment in your story. In this article, we are exploring the story beat of Break Into Act 3, also known as Break Into 3 (but I always thought those names a bit confusing, hence the addition of the word ‘Act’).

What is the Break Into Act 3 story beat?

The Break Into Act 3 story beat is where Act 3 and the final quarter of your book begins. Your protagonist has pulled themself up out of the funk the Dark Night of the Soul left them in and knows what they need to do to get the job done right this time. It typically occurs at the 80% mark, or at around 64,000 words in a typical 80,000 word novel.

The protagonist learns what they need to do in order to succeed with their goals this time around. Or maybe their goals have shifted slightly to be more aligned with their thematic truth. They often have help in realising this with a piece of new information or inspiration from the B Story, or an important sidekick. They have realised what they need to learn, what they need as opposed to what they want, and they know how to go about it.

In The Hunger Games, the Break Into Act 3 is when Katniss realises that she can’t win by playing to the capital’s rules. The only way she can get what she wants—for both herself and Peeter to survive—is to go against what the capital wants: for there to be only one survivor. She does this by threatening a double suicide with Peeter by eating poisonous berries. Regardless of whether you believe she actually would have gone through with it or not, the bluff is the moment that Katniss rises from all the pain and loss she has suffered in the games and came up with a way to subvert the capitol’s expectations.

The Break Into Act 3 is the new game plan, the dedication to get the job done.

Break Into Act 3 in Disney’s Mulan

In Disney’s Mulan, Mulan knows now what she has to do: she has to get to the Imperial City and warn them of the Huns’ invasion. She first finds Shang in the middle of a parade and tries to warn him, but he doesn’t trust her after finding out that she’s actually a woman. She lets her fellow soldiers know to keep an eye out and then leaves to try to find someone who will listen to her.

After coming through the Dark Night of the Soul in the mountains where commander and fellow soldiers abandoned her, Mulan has a path she knows she has to follow and, more importantly, now that her secret is out she needs to do so as a woman, accepting that part of herself. She is now fulfilling her need, seeking acceptance for who she is, all facets of herself, the woman, and the warrior merged into one.

Finally, when the emperor is kidnapped, she realises that an unseen woman is exactly who she needs to be to succeed and a new plan is formed.

Break Into Act 3 in Flewelling’s Luck in the Shadows

The apparent nonsense message of Silverfish that Seregil signed to Alec turned out to be a plan that could get him out of trouble, and Micum knew exactly what he was talking about.

“Old Silverfish was a name we gave to a slippery customer Nysander had us track down a few years back,” explained Micum. “He was another blackmailer and, like his namesake, he had a talent for disappearing into the woodwork. Seregil had a hell of a time finding his cache. He finally did, though, and I never saw a prettier bit of coggery.” “How did he do it?” “We’ll get to that. What else did he tell you?” “To depend on you, and that there’d be a lucky moon tomorrow night when I should pray to Illior. I think he means we do the burglary then.” “Right. We’ll pay a daylight visit to Master Alben’s shop, look the place over, then do the real work after dark.” p341

Alec has some hope restored with this plan in place, and they now know what to do and how to do it. He will have to do the burglary himself, and this time Seregil won’t be there to help if there’s any trouble. It’s time for him to prove his worth and help his friend.

Final Thoughts

The Break Into Act 3 story beat is the moment when the protagonist realises what they need to do and comes up with a plan on how to do it. They are now working to fulfill their need as opposed to their want and things are on the right track. This is also the start of the third act of the story, and we are now in the final stretch.

Next time we will look at the Finale scene beat, where everything comes together. This is the penultimate scene beat, so we’re nearing the end now. I hope to see you then!
